Painful Intelligence: Aapo Hyvärinen on the Concept of Suffering, Drawing Parallels between Humans and AI, and Conclusions for AI Ethics.

In this epside we welcome Aapo Hyvärinen, which is a prominent Finnish professor of computer science at the University of Helsinki, renowned for his groundbreaking research in independent component analysis (ICA). He has held various professorial positions, including Professor of Computational Data Analysis and Professor of Computer Science. From 2016 to 2019, he served as Professor of Machine Learning at the Gatsby Computational Neuroscience Unit, University College London. Aapo is widely recognized for his contributions to machine learning, evident in his numerous publications and editorial roles in prestigious journals and conferences. His work spans various areas, including noise contrastive estimation, causal inference, and generative adversarial networks, reflecting his interdisciplinary approach to academic research.

In our conversation with Dr. Aapo Johannes Hyvärinen, we explored his groundbreaking work in independent component analysis (ICA) and non-Gaussian distributions. Aapo also shared his metaphysical perspective on the interplay between minds and machines, particularly through his book “Painful Intelligence,” which merges AI theory with philosophical insights on suffering. He discussed the concept of Intelligent Agents and their experience of suffering when failing to achieve goals, linking this to human desire and frustration. Aapo also examined parallels between human and AI behaviors, such as experience replay and decision-making, and raised important questions about AI’s potential for developing a survival instinct, emphasizing the need for further research to understand and mitigate risks.
